Westworld

By 30th October 2018

Westworld were formed in 1987 by former Generation X guitarist Bob “Derwood” Andrews and American vocalist Elizabeth Westwood. They were immediately signed by Korda Marshall at BMG (later to sign Madonna, Ash, Garbage, The Darkness). Derwood’s trademark riffing and Elizabeth’s natural good looks, charisma and prowess as a “real” singer, propelled their first single to number 11 in the UK charts. Sonic Boom Boy sold in excess of a quarter of a million copies and went on to be a big hit in many other countries including Japan, Australia, Germany, France, Italy and Scandinavia.
The second single Banana Bamboo got to number 22 in the UK and was also a hit in numerous other territories.
The follow up singles Silver Mac and Where the Action Is were also UK top 40 hits.
The band released two albums on BMG before signing to Savage Records in New York in 1991.
The band toured all over Europe in support of their BMG releases during 87/88/89.
In 1992 Elizabeth Westwood and Derwood Andrews left London and moved to Arizona to write and record new material.
A new project called ‘Moondogg’ began to take shape.
Elizabeth & Derwood came back to London and put out the first of three critically acclaimed Moondogg albums.
In 2011 Sony Centers used Sonic Boom Boy in their national UK TV ad campaign. Also in 2011, Cherry Red Records released a Westworld greatest hits compilation ‘Beatbox Rock ‘n’ Roll’.
Fast forward: Elizabeth is currently in London working on various projects including writing with Kirk Brandon and singing in The Rebelles. The Rebelles are a three-part harmony group which includes Tracie Hunter, daughter of legend Ian Hunter. Having just released their first single to critical acclaim, The Rebelles are finishing an album, with guest artists playing including; Kenney Jones (The Faces), Mick Jones (The Clash), Slim Jim Phantom (The Stray Cats), Clem Burke (Blondie), Chris Spedding (Roxy Music) and Glen Matlock (The Sex Pistols).
With Derwood’s blessing, Elizabeth is re-forming Westworld to reignite the passion of 80’s beat box rock n roll for a new generation who weren’t around the first time.
